Review

Asthma is rising at an alarming rate, as are allergies to foods such as milk and nuts. Some 11 million Americans find themselves wheezing and sneezing. Are we the victims of overly enthusiastic hygienic practices or of other factors beyond our control? How do we fight back?

Naturopathic physician Chris D. Meletis examines a wide range of allergies, including those to foodstuffs, dust, and other airborne allergens, and materials like latex and chemicals. His thorough, up-to-date book explores why allergies occur and are on the rise, including the “hygiene hypothesis,” which argues that overuse of antibiotics and antibacterial agents prevents our immune systems from building up necessary resistance when we are young.

Perhaps most important, he explains what works – and what does not work- to alleviate allergies, discussing both naturopathic and traditional pharmaceutical approaches to treatment, as well as ways in which naturopathic approaches can be combined with traditional medicine. Finally, he documents ongoing research and possible future developments, including testing of vaccines for some food allergies.

As suffers well know, allergies are at best annoying, at worst debilitating. Liberation from Allergies: Natural Approaches to Freedom and Better Health offers all of those millions of victims the answers they seek.

Chris D. Meletis, N.D., is a naturopath in private practice.
